Conscious Sedation

Some patients, especially those who feel anxious when visiting the dentist, can benefit greatly from the conscious sedation service we offer at Truro Dental Care. Conscious sedation is also very helpful in cases of hypersensitive gag reflex and limited jaw opening.

Types of Conscious Sedation

Oral Sedation is administered by taking a tablet an hour before your dental visit. The disadvantage with this method of sedation is that the level of sedation for each person is not predictable. The medication used for oral sedation in dentistry is from a group of drugs known as Benzodiazapines. Not only do these medications have a sedative effect they also have some degree of amnesiac effect for most people. Patients may remember little or nothing about their dental appointment.

Advantages of Oral Sedation

  • Easy to administer: Swallow a small pill
  • It is safe and easy to monitor
  • Works well for patients with low level anxiety
  • Low Cost

Disadvantages of Dental Oral Sedation

  • The level of Sedation is not easily changed
  • Someone must drive you to and from your dental appointment
  • There is no analgesic (pain relief effect)
  • Not effective for people with higher levels of anxiety

IV Sedation also known as Deep Conscious Sedation is used by Dentists with specialized training and special certification.

With this type of sedation, medications are administered directly into the blood stream through the veins at the elbow or back of the hand. The greatest advantage of IV Sedation is the level of sedation can be accurately controlled by the dentist. The drugs used for IV Sedation are more effective then the same drugs taken orally.

There is a more profound relaxation and amnesia associated with this technique, and it is recommended for patients who have higher levels of anxiety. A numbing injection is still required, but this is only given once the patient is fully sedated. IV Sedation is an exceptionally safe alternative to General Anaesthesia, as breathing and swallowing reflexes are not affected and unpleasant side-effects are avoided.

Please contact our reception for more information about having dental treatment under sedation.

Nervous Patients

After years of anxiously neglecting my teeth, I took the plunge to see Dr. Rainsberry.   She’s very caring and compassionate, gentle and human! Does a great job – I have recommended the surgery to my support group for autistic people who also struggle in medical environments. I will be a repeat visitor until my teeth are at optimum.
